PATS is Ford's own anti-theft system, and the fact it has run consistently across the range for years works in owners' favour: it is one of the better-supported systems for mobile diagnostic and programming work, which is why most Ford key jobs can be completed where the vehicle already is.
The broken section has to come out of the barrel before anything else can be done. On higher-mileage Fiestas and Focuses a sticking barrel is often what put the strain on the key in the first place, so the lock deserves checking as well — otherwise a brand new key goes the same way.
