BMW Auto Locksmith — Wrexham & North Wales

1 Series, 3 Series and X-range BMWs are a regular part of our workload from Wrexham through to Shrewsbury, including the trickier CAS and FEM jobs.

BMW has a steady following across North Wales and the border, with the 1 Series and 3 Series popular as daily and company cars and the X1 and X3 increasingly common family SUVs around Chester and Telford. Owners tend to keep these cars a long time, which means we see everything from older CAS-generation models to newer FEM/BDC-equipped cars on the same day.

BMW's security has run through the CAS (Car Access System) family of modules for years, with newer models moving on to the FEM (Front Electronic Module) and BDC (Body Domain Controller) architecture. Comfort Access keyless entry is common across the range, and some ECU-related key work needs the vehicle's individual serial number read directly from the engine control unit — a step that separates a proper BMW locksmith job from a basic key-cutting attempt.

BMW key & access systems

CAS (Car Access System) modules

Earlier CAS generation - Manages immobiliser and access functions on older 1 Series, 3 Series and X-range models.

Updated CAS with Comfort Access

Later CAS generation - Adds keyless comfort entry alongside the established CAS immobiliser logic.

FEM (Front Electronic Module)

Modern platforms - Handles body and access electronics on newer models, often requiring the ECU's individual serial number for key work.

BDC (Body Domain Controller)

Latest platforms - The current-generation successor to FEM, used on the newest BMWs with more integrated security access.

BMW key FAQs

There is no keyhole on my X3's door — how would you get in if the battery is flat?

Most BMWs of that era keep a lock barrel hidden behind a cap on the driver's door handle and carry a mechanical blade inside the fob itself, so a dead vehicle battery does not automatically mean anything has to be forced. We confirm what your particular car has before starting rather than assuming.

I have found a second-hand BMW key online — can you code it to my car?

Usually not, and it is worth knowing that before spending anything. A BMW key is married to the access module of the car it was coded to, so one that has already lived on another 1 Series or X3 generally cannot be adopted by yours. We will check rather than guess, but the honest expectation is that it will not take.

Does it matter how many keys my 3 Series has had over its life?

It can. BMW's access modules hold a limited number of key positions, and positions already used are not always simple to clear, so a 3 Series with a long history of replacement keys can need more diagnostic work than one still on its original set.
